A highly anticipated new release! Like a young talent finding its voice, our Blaufränkisch vines are now starting to offer true expressions of the variety. Our 2023 Blaufränkisch is an exuberant medium bodied red with the fruit and spice reminiscent of the Luxardo Cherry in the bottom of your Manhattan. Agriculturally, Blaufränkisch enjoys growing up here in the Finger Lakes and offers a compelling contrast to many of our other red wines. With alluring aromas of dark cherry and a hint of wild herbs, the structured tannins and lively backbone create a dynamic mouthfeel. Known for its versatile and food-friendly profile, Blaufränkisch wines pair beautifully with charcuterie boards or dishes with earthy spice. Did someone say mushroom risotto?
Our half-acre block is situated close to Seneca Lake, extending seasons and building additional ripeness in this earthy and cherry-forward profile. Time in 500L neutral oak barrels accentuates the variety's natural tendency to have that birchbark soda quality that makes this wine so unique. This variety isn't new to the Finger Lakes region but it has certainly gained more traction over the last decade. It's a very hearty variety that has succeeded immensely on Seneca Lake, and we continue to love working with it as much as we love the finished wine. Since 2020 we have changed the label on this wine to Blaufränkisch, as it is the more Austrian nod to this variety, which we formally referred to as Lemberger. Both names are varietally correct - we have simply made, the change to calling our wine Blaufränkisch.
